How to dress for your shape

What body shape are you?

1) IF YOU HAVE......

Shoulders and hips that are about the same width apart

Medium to large bust

Smaller waist

Curvy hips and bum, but slim thighs

YOU HAVE A ...... HOURGLASS FIGURE

Do's
  • V-necks, scoop necks, sweetheart necklines (minimise larger busts)
  • Define your waist (fitted clothes, Waist belts)
  • Blazers are a MUST to balance out your big chest and nip you in at the waist
  • Show off your curves with pencil skirts and fitted dresses (SPANX and a good bra, support them curves!!)
Don't
  • Don’t wear baggy clothes (you will look like a tent!)
  • Don’t wear high necklines or smock dresses (add bulk where you don't need it)
  • Don't wear flat mannish shoes (Darling, trust me they won't do you any favours)

2) IF YOU HAVE.....

Small to average bust

Neat waist

Shoulders are narrower than hips and thighs (may have to buy a size larger on the bottom half)

Carry your weight down on your thighs and have a rounded bum

YOU HAVE A......PEAR SHAPE FIGURE

DOs:
  • Wear platforms to lengthen your legs.
  • Do wear a-line skirts with fitted tops.
  • Define your upper body and waist with fitted tops and belts
  • Do look for slashed necklines and halter-neck styles as they will broaden your narrow shoulders.
DON’Ts:
  • Don’t wear super fitted clothes on your bottom half – this will exaggerate your hips and thighs
  • Don’t wear anything on your bottom half that has side pockets as they add width.
  • Don’t wear prints on your bottom half  (will draw attention to the wrong places)
  • Don’t wear shoes with ankle straps – this will cut off your legs and make you look shorter than you are

3) IF YOU HAVE.....
Shoulders, waist and hips approx same width
Not much of a defined waist
Average to small bust
Long, lean limbs

YOU HAVE A....RECTANGLE FIGURE

DO’s:
  • Wear belted and fitted styles to give the illusion of a defined waist
  •        go for wrap dresses that tie under the bust line. They are perfect for creating a feminine shape and              definition.
  • Wear straight leg jeans and slim-fitting skirts to show off your lean hips and thighs
  • Create curves with draping, asymmetric shapes and flouncy hemlines.
DON’Ts:
  • Don’t be scared to wear shapely, waisted clothes to give yourself more of an hourglass shape
  • Don’t wear anything cropped – it will make you look short in the torso
  • Don't go for anything masculine, boxy or formless.

IF YOU HAVE....
Broader back and upper body
Medium to large bust
No defined waist and a slight tummy
Slim hips and thighs with slender legs and ankles

YOU HAVE AN..APPLE FIGURE

DO’s:
  • V-necks, scoop necks and sweetheart necklines are best for your shape.
  • look for wide waistbands, They will give you support and a wider leg will keep you in proportion.
  • Go for side fastenings, flat front trousers and skirts to avoid bulk around your tummy.
  • Wear fitted jeans and skirts to show off slender hips and thighs
  • Belt dresses (around the waist)
  • Use necklaces and scarves, or open necklines (cardigans and jackets) to create a vertical shape down your body (this distracts from your tummy and bust)
DON’Ts:
  • Don't go for anything that is pleated at the waist as it will add bulk to the tummy. Instead look for styles that have a flat wide waistband and then pleat from under your tummy
  • Don’t wear over-sized and super loose-fitting clothes, this will make you look bigger than you are.
  • don't wear shoulder pads! You do not need help with this area
  • Stay away from jeans with darker washes. These will only make your hips appear smaller

Remember Girls,
You can be a mixture of two shapes as We are all different,
These are just guidelines break the rules a little to what you feel comfortable in..! Ditch the black and go for some colour it isn't always the 'safe option' it can sometimes make you look dreary, Go for a colour that suits your colouring..!!
And one last thing never have that 'I'm too old to wear that attitude', You don't have to wear trends off the catwalk but introduce them into your look with variations that suit you and accessories ect.
